I find it pretty ridiculous. Interesting how killing animals in games is not ok, but killing people is. Stupidity.

China say jump, people tend to say how high.
Killing a virtual panda is too bad for China, suprised that the Sunspear's were allowed to rally against Varesh.

Please use logic .
China has a law about pandas - so technically they have the power to ban games as they wish if they feel it goes against their beliefs/laws.Unless your racist you want your game to be available in all countries for sales and money making purposes.
China bans gw game and thats quite a few potential customers and cash gone
Say gw decided to have it where a primary quest involves say pigs being cooked and eaten by that player - now thats the jewish people and muslims removed from guildwars .
Pandas you always think of as being cute - polar bears/tigers you know are predators but have a slight cuteness when cubs. But to portray a panda as being a killing machine would offend a lot of people even tho its just a game.
Game companies have to view what can be alowed in all countries rather than get their games banned .
I also think they have to watch exactly what the game goes into - govt dont like games which can become a politcal issue. I do remember a playstation game that got banned in several countries - Thrill Kill .. but i also recall its 'engine' was used for a Wu Tang Clan game which played similar but without the violence ( thrill kill relied on violence and graffic wounds ).
The end of the day it boils down to image - you keep a gd image with a country and they allow the games but do something that can show them ( eg chinese looking factions chr killin a panda ) doing an act thats against their rules and you portray them as being that.

So last time I checked pretty much every country has a law against killing humans. What exactly is the difference between killing an animated panda and killing an animated human?

I'm offended by the killing machine called White Tiger.
Oh by the way - I love killing Elonian players because they're dark skinned. Hate crime ftw. Can you see where I'm going with this? :-)

Time to remove Nightfall from the game!
Anyway, all the answers already explained it. While tigers and polar bears are endangered, they are not the "national symbol" of a potentially huge market for the game company.
It's fine to offend tree-huggers, just not fine to offend a massive section of the market.

This was because of graphical problems, not because hippos are endangered. Or a symbol of China

Do you want A.net to be sued? It's a rather minor change that they implemented and it is better to do that then risk getting into trouble over. Preventative lawyering at its best.

Epic win. You pretty much summed up everything I was thinking in one neat little bow-tied package.

Indeed, *cough* tibet *cough*.
But anyway, it was the right thing to do from Anet's side. Quite a large portion of the market might have been lost otherwise.

China's the only country to complain about animals. No1 else did. So nothing else was taken out. Simple as.
